In September 2025, Deep Insight had the privilege of delivering a trustee workshop for World Habitat at the historic Observer Building in Hastings.
We designed the session to be focused on strengthening trustee capacity around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), an essential pillar in World Habitat’s mission to ensure that everyone has a safe, secure, and affordable home.
About World Habitat
World Habitat is a UK-based charity advancing innovation and sustainability in community-led housing solutions across the UK and worldwide. Guided by values of caring, independence, and innovation, the organisation works with global communities to create lasting solutions that tackle inequality and improve lives globally.
Workshop focus
Together, trustees reflected on organisational priorities, governance responsibilities, and the wider social context of DEI, exploring:..
Shared foundations – building a common understanding of DEI concepts.
World Habitat’s DEI journey – celebrating progress and identifying opportunities for growth.
Global perspectives – how DEI translates across cultural and political environments, including emerging developments in the US.
Key themes explored by the board were:
Re-evaluating DEI commitments – ensuring approaches remain relevant and impactful.
Navigating politics and governance – aligning trustee roles with inclusive governance.
Balancing DEI with business objectives – integrating equity principles so they strengthen rather than compete with organisational goals.
It was inspiring to witness trustees’ openness, curiosity, and commitment to embedding DEI across World Habitat’s strategy, culture, and international partnerships.
A big thank you to the World Habitat team, in particular CEO David Ireland and Joanne Birch (Director of Finance) for creating the space for this important work.
